Selling a whole collection is a different job from selling a single coin. It is rarely about one headline piece - it is about someone patiently working through albums, folders and tins, separating the metal value from the collector value, and being straight with you about which is which.
That is what Nick Barker does on every visit. He has been buying collections across South West London and Surrey for years, and the collections that come out best are the ones nobody has interfered with beforehand. No cleaning, no sorting, no splitting.
How it works
1. Call and describe it roughly
Albums, tins, folders, a bank bag of loose change - however it is stored is fine. You do not need to sort, list or clean anything first.
2. Nick values it in your home
The collection is worked through properly rather than weighed as a job lot. Bullion, collectable and rare pieces are separated and explained as he goes.
3. One clear offer for the lot
You get a figure for the whole collection, with the reasoning behind it. Cherry-picking the good bits and leaving you the rest is not how we work.
4. Paid the same visit
Cash or instant bank transfer once you accept. If you would rather think about it, the valuation stands and there is no pressure.
Three things that cost people money
Cleaning the coins. It feels helpful and it is the single most damaging thing you can do. Original surfaces are a large part of what a collector pays for, and once they are gone they do not come back.
Selling the gold separately as scrap. A sovereign melted for its gold gives up whatever premium the date and condition carried. Have the whole collection looked at before anything goes to a bullion dealer - see our guide to sovereign values.
Trusting an old price guide. Catalogue values from a book printed a decade ago bear little relation to what anyone will actually pay today. Live demand is the only number that matters, and it moves.
