Selling a coin collection in London normally means one of three things: a trip to a dealer in the centre, an online listing with all the packing and risk that involves, or an auction house that takes a commission and pays months later. None of those are much fun when what you actually have is a biscuit tin of your grandfather's coins and a question about what they are worth.
Thames Coins & Collectables is a one-man local operation run by Nick Barker from Teddington. He drives to you, goes through the collection coin by coin while you watch, explains what is bullion, what is collectable and what is genuinely rare, and gives you a figure the same visit. The valuation is free whether you sell or not.
No trip into central London
You do not have to carry a coin collection across the city on the train. Nick drives to you, anywhere in South and West London.
Paid on the day
Cash or instant bank transfer in your own home. No consignment, no waiting for an auction to settle three months later.
Nothing is taken away first
Everything stays with you until you have accepted an offer. No sending coins off to be graded and hoping they come back.
Usually within a day or two
Including evenings and weekends. Call 07956 520733 and we will find a time that suits you.
What London collections usually contain
After years of house visits across the capital, the pattern is fairly consistent. Almost every collection holds pre-decimal copper worth very little, a run of pre-1947 silver worth its metal, and then one or two things that carry the value of the whole lot - most often a gold sovereign or two, an early proof set, or a note that nobody realised was scarce.
The mistake is assuming the bulk is where the money is and letting the good pieces go with it. We separate it out properly and tell you which is which, even on the items we are not buying. There is more on this in our guide to selling old British coins and what a gold sovereign is worth.
